This is our annual Chase the Sun Ride/Event. Full details (such as route information and hotel costs) will be added as they become available.

Day one will be a ride to the East coast, with an overnight at Samcheok. We will wake up at O-dark-early on Sunday, watch the sun rise, take a group photo, and then head West, arriving at the West Coast (Yeonpo Beach, Taean-gun) in time to see the Sunset and take another group photo. After an overnight at Boryeong we will return to Seoul Monday.

This ride will be filled with great roads, great friends, and great times. Last year we had 14 bikes for the ride...hoping to have an equally good turnout this year!

First, let me say...if there is one ride you MUST do every year, THIS IS THE ONE!

Here is the update for the ride (Garmin and Google maps below):

4 Sep 2010:
0650 Townhouse (PX)/ Safety Brief and immediate roll out 0700 hours. Arrive east coast/Samchok Beach approximately 1530-1630 hours.

We will tentatively staying at the below hotel (For military passes):

Samcheok Beach Motel
Galcheon-Dong
Samcheok-Si, GANG WEON DO
033-576-0163

5 Sep 2010
0500 Muster for Pictures / Rollout for West coast and chasing the sun! Arriving approximately 1700 hours, take a photo, and enjoy the night!

Tentatively staying at the Manhattan Hotel (same place as the 30th Year Anniversary).

Manhattan Hotel
Sinhuk-dong #1948, Boryong City
South Chungch'ong Province
041-934-1061

6 Sep 2010
Sleep in, recover, depart for home...check out NLT Noon. Decision on departure TBD.

The total mileage will be about 660 miles. I am sure there will be some safety points, but just to let you know we will be going up and down mountains with high degrees of temperature changes, so make sure to pack some WARM CLOTHING for the ride (see below pic of waterfall, that was late MAY). Last year I almost froze my hands off in the morning in the Taebaek mountains...but the view made me forget about it...almost.

Prices:
Gas: ~100K
Room: 80K
Food: ~100k (All meals are on your own).

280K minimum, I am bringing 400K to make sure.

Please start posting here if you plan to attend, and how many rooms you need. Two people can share a room but remember, unless you are "intimate," these beds are small! (one on the floor)
We will start collecting the money soon, and will need money NLT 1 Sep 2010 to reserve the rooms.

Those I have signed up so far:
Les 1pax each Samchok/Daechon
Tuyoshi 2pax each Samchok/Daechon
Firstshirt 2pax each Samchok/Daechon
B2 1pax each Samchok/Daechon
Reaper 2pax each Samchok/Daechon

Last, here are a few pics from last year (routes below that):

I got a friend of Les', who is a Korean that rides with the "Shadow" club, who wants to go and take his wife as well. His nickname is Tuyoshi. Les rode with him a few times, and he uses the same hand/arm signals we do, but I will get him a check ride next week on the 16th. Will need one volunteer to do his check ride that day with me. We will have to meet him off-post since he is Korean, planning on 30 minutes to 1 hour for the ride.

Tuyoshi is tentatively signed up for two people, one room each night.

Billy,

I take it you will need 1 room on east coast and 2 on west coast?

All,

Unfortunately I will not be able to make the Chase the Sun Run ride now. I have other obligations during that time frame which prevent my attendance. I will defer to to other club officers to collect up the money for the west coast portion of the ride (SBU money). Please continue to post here if you are attending so the hotel on the east coast can still be notified of how many rooms are needed. Coordination for west coast should go through Billy for payment to SBU by NLT 20 August (or make arrangements for him to pay upfront for you).

I'm planning on going and would like to reserve one hotel room on each coast. Since I have to work Monday, I may either come back to Seoul Sunday night or early Monday morning, but for now the plan is to come back early Monday morning.

On a somewhat related note (for me anyway), the heads of the bolts that attach the foot peg/brake pedal to the frame snapped off during my accident, but the rest of the bolts are still in frame. I have some Easy Outs, but am having trouble drilling the holes to get them in. Does Yongsan Auto Skills Center or one of the local shops have people that can help with this? Just need the labor to mainly drill the hole - those botls are made of pretty hard metal, and I don't have the right equipment to drill through it in a reasonable amount of time.

Mark

I'd go to the Auto Skills Shop first and see what they can do. They have always been helpful to me on this kind of stuff. They don't necessarily know motorcycles, but they know the tools and skills for this type of problem.

I will make the ride. No passengers for me. I will see if Kathleen wants to join for the second night with SBU.

Count me in for both nights. I may have a passenger, but too early to tell. But, with or without her, I'm still in.

If possible I would like to go. I have not had a check ride yet. I ride with the Intruders of Hawaii and been riding for years. I am a Road Guard for my club. It will be just me for both nights.

Entry on home page says Safety Brief at 0650. Does this mean we're leaving at 0705? Or are departing at 0700 and changing our SOP which has always been 15 minutes before departure for the Safety Briefing?

Wish I was along for this one, guys! Now, Remember, when you line the bikes up for pictures on Samcheok Beach, DON'T drive the bikes out onto the sand... they WILL get stuck! LOL I'll be at a wedding on the east coast of Florida on Sunday, 5 September, and, driving back to Tampa, (which is on the WEST coast of Florida,) on the 6th so, I'll be conducting my own "Chase the Sun." Won't be as enjoyable without you guys! Have fun, and have a great ride!
